Constraining the Nature of the Galactic Center X-ray Source Population

چکیده

We searched for infrared counterparts to the cluster of X-ray point sources discovered by Chandra in the Galactic Center Region (GCR). While the sources could be white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black holes accreting from stellar companions, their X-ray properties are consistent with magnetic Cataclysmic Variables, or High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXB) at low accretion-rates. A direct way to decide between these possibilities and hence between alternative formation scenarios is to measure or constrain the luminosity distribution of the companions. Using infrared (J, H, K, Brγ) imaging, we searched for counterparts corresponding to typical HMXB secondaries: spectral type B0V with K<15 at the GCR. We found no significant excess of bright stars in Chandra error circles, indicating that HMXBs are not the dominant X-ray source population, and account for fewer than 10% of the hardest X-ray sources. Discovery of the neutron star nature of SLX 1737 − 282

SLX 1737−282 is a persistent moderately bright X-ray source 1. 2 from the Galactic center. X-ray observations with the Wide Field Cameras on BeppoSAX have for the first time revealed the true nature of SLX 1737−282: a 15-min long thermonuclear flash was detected exposing the source as a neutron star in a binary system. The flash was Eddington-limited constraining the distance to between 5 and 8...

On the Chandra X-ray Sources in the Galactic Center

Recent deep Chandra surveys of the Galactic center region have revealed the existence of a faint, hard X-ray source population. While the nature of this population is unknown, it is likely that several types of stellar objects contribute. For sources involving binary systems, accreting white dwarfs and accreting neutron stars with main sequence companions have been proposed. Among the accreting...

Cataclysmic Variables in Globular Clusters, the Galactic Center, and Local Space

We compare the X-ray spectra and luminosities, in the 2-8 keV band, of known and suspected cataclysmic variables (CVs) in different environments, assessing the nature of these source populations. These objects include nearby CVs observed with ASCA; the Galactic Center X-ray source population identified by Muno et al.; and likely CVs identified in globular clusters. Both of the latter have been ...

The Nature of the Faint Chandra X-ray Sources in the Galactic Centre

Recent Chandra observations have revealed a large population of faint X-ray point sources in the Galactic Centre. The observed population consists of ∼> 2000 faint sources in the luminosity range ∼ 10 − 10 erg s. The majority of these sources (70%) are described by hard spectra, while the rest are rather soft. The nature of these sources still remains unknown. Belczynski & Taam (2004) demonstra...

Multi-frequency studies of Galactic X-ray sources populations Hard X-ray Galactic sources of low to intermediate LX A search for isolated accreting black holes

Our Galaxy harbours a large population of X-ray sources of intermediate to low X-ray luminosity (typically LX from 1027 to 1034 erg s−1). At energies below 2 keV, active coronae completely dominate the X-ray landscape. However, the nature and the properties of the Galactic sources detected at energies >∼ 2 keV is much less constrained. Optical follow-up spectroscopic observations show that in a...
